Mekong Valley Alliance
Countries along the Mekong River: Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam; face a significant burden of HPB diseases, with marked disparities in access to surgical care. While Thailand boasts a robust healthcare infrastructure capable of managing complex HPB disorders, countries like Cambodia struggle with limited resources and surgical expertise in this field. In Vietnam, although major cities have developed HPB care, there remains a pressing need to expand these services to hospitals in provincial areas. During Cambodia’s 2023 IHPBA outreach program, we observed minimal collaboration among surgeons across Mekong countries, despite their geographical closeness. The November, 2024 initiative, alongside strengthening HPB surgical care in Cambodia and Vietnam, aims to establish a "Mekong HPB Alliance" to foster a durable network for HPB surgery across these nations. The November, 2024 programme involved faculty from Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam in addition to faculty members from non-Mekong region to encourage cross-border knowledge-sharing and mentorship.

2024 Nepal Chapter Outreach
The IHPBA has a long-standing tradition of outreach in Nepal with the first outreach activity taking place in 2014. In 2017, an IHPBA Nepal Chapter was established and there have been multiple outreach trips with expansion beyond Kathmandu to Chitwan, Pokhara, Baglung and Nepalgunj in the western region of Nepal. During that time, the surgical focus has included “Safe Cholescystechtomy” and benign HPB diseases, e.g., hydratid cysts and pancreatitis, as well as more complicated HPB diseases.
This year’s activities included a visit to Dhangadi, in far western Nepal. A one-day course on benign HPB diseases with didactic lecture including videos with very interactive sessions with the local organizing body comprising of Society of Surgeons Nepal, Province 7, Far west branch was attended by 50 local surgeons and residents from Kathmandu.
The local surgeons have been asked to do the audit of the cases done after the In-Reach program to evaluate the impact of In-Reach in the clinical practice. One of the representatives will present the audit in next In-Reach/Outreach program in another part of Nepal.
