History of the Chapter:

E-AHPBA Membership & Development Committee Meeting" was held online on 27 June 2022. Turkish Society of HPB Surgery President, Mustafa Kerem, attended the meeting. In this meeting, support was requested from the Turkish Chapter for neighbouring countries to join E-AHPBA. In fact, the first meeting on this topic was held in Izmir in 2018 in cooperation with the HPB Association of Turkey and EAHPBA. We were able to discuss the issue with our colleagues from Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. As the Turkish HPB Association, we decided to hold our first meeting in Azerbaijan. Nuru Bayramov from Azerbaijan Medical University and Mustafa Kerem, Vice President of the Turkish Society of HPB Surgery, planned the first meeting. "First Turkey-Azerbaijan HPB Meeting" was held in Ganja on February 23-24, 2019. The second meeting was held on November 19, 2022, and the third on December 24, 2024. It was instrumental in establishing scientific exchange and strong social relations for academics from neighbouring countries, especially Azerbaijan Medical University. As a result of these efforts, our attempt to establish a regional association, which began in 2021, was successful. In September 2024, the "Trans-Caspian HPB Surgery Association" was approved by the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan as an official association. Representatives from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan formed the first board of directors.

Summary of Activities:

Immediately after its establishment, the first scientific meeting of the Trans-Caspian HPB Surgery Association was held in Baku in December 2024 as part of the 3rd Turkey-Azerbaijan HPB Surgery Meeting. The one-day meeting titled "Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery" was held in the Surgical building of Azerbaijan Medical University. Although it was the first meeting, more than 100 participants attended. E-AHPBA President Prof. Dr. Marc Basselink and Prof. Giovanni Marchegiani, Chairman of the "Membership and Expansion Committee" of the Association, attended the meeting online. The second meeting is planned to be held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, in June 2026.
