HPBridge LMIC Research Grant

The HPBridge LMIC Research Grant Programme was created to strengthen research capacity among members of HPBridge working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Through targeted financial support, the programme enables members to launch and advance research projects relevant to hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery. Each grant provides up to USD $5,000 for up to two years for research-related expenses including data collection,

Objectives

  • Provide research funding: Offer financial support to HPBridge members from low-and-middle-income countries to enable them to establish research initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration and mentorship within HPBridge peer groups

Funding

Up to three grants of USD $5,000 will be awarded in the first year, with the possibility of an additional $5,000 in the second year, conditional on satisfactory progress.

Scope

  • Projects can cover clinical, basic, or translational sciences and must be relevant to the field of HPB surgery.
  • Funding covers operating costs, including but not limited to research personal administrative, data management, project-related supplies and equipment, literature searches, and program evaluation.
  • Funding does not cover applicant’s or co-investigators’ salary or costs for travel and attendance to conferences.
  • Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with other IHPBA members, including those involved in HPBridge. Joint proposals submitted by two or more HPBridge members from different centres are particularly encouraged.
  • Applicants may combine this grant with other funding sources, and are encouraged to apply separately for other opportunities, such as IHPBA travel grants.

Eligibility

  • This grant is restricted to IHPBA Members who are members of HPBridge.  If there are barriers to you joining IHPBA, please contact Lisa Yarrow (lisa@ihpba.org)to discuss.

Application Process

Applications must be submitted in English via an online form and include the following:

  1. Title – maximum 80 words
  2. Project proposal divided into Background, Objective, Methods (including outcomes and analysis plan), Significance – maximum 500 words
  3. Applicant details and experience – maximum 500 words
  4. Applicant CV
  5. Statement of impact demonstrating the impact the funding opportunity will have on the feasibility of the project – maximum 300 words.
  6. Impact statement of HPB surgery and the applicant’s career -maximum 300 words
  7. Budget summary in table format including line-item description, justification for each cost, amount requested per item (in USD), total requested (not exceeding $5,000 per year)
  8. Other funding received for the project
  9. HPBridge partner identified for support (not mandatory)

Ethics and compliance

  • All research involving human or animal subjects must have appropriate ethical approvals
  • Projects must adhere to all relevant local regulations and guidelines.

Reporting Requirements

  • Grantees will be required to submit progress reports at 6 and 12 months.
  • Approval of Year 2 funding is contingent upon satisfactory progress, demonstrated in Year 1 reporting.
